About
This course offers a foundational survey of the Old Testament, inviting students into the world of its people, events, and books. It provides not only an overview of the content and message of the Old Testament writings but also a deeper appreciation for their historical, geographical, cultural, and religious settings. Special focus is given to understanding the structure, formation, and unity of the Bible, exploring how the Scriptures came to be and how they continue to speak to us today. The course unfolds in five key units. It begins with an introduction to the Bible’s meaning, diversity, and divine authorship. From there, students will explore the structure and canonization of both the Old and New Testaments, followed by an examination of the theological unity of the Bible and the centrality of Christ throughout. The background of the biblical world is then studied—highlighting geography, history, and archaeology—before concluding with a sweeping survey of all the Old Testament books, grouped by literary genre. By the end of the course, students will gain not only a clearer understanding of the Old Testament’s message and theology but also a deeper confidence in using Scripture for personal devotion, academic study, and public ministry.
