About
This course offers an advanced study of Johannine Literature, focusing on the Fourth Gospel and the three Epistles of John. It approaches these texts both historically and theologically, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of their background, structure, themes, and theological contributions. Through a contextual lens, the course explores the relevance of Johannine thought within the socio-religious and pluralistic landscape of India. Structured across five detailed units, the course begins by examining issues of authorship, date, purpose, and the distinctiveness of John in contrast to the Synoptic Gospels. It then delves into the Hellenistic and Jewish influences shaping the Johannine worldview. Core theological themes such as Christology, dualism, signs, the Holy Spirit, eschatology, and the symbolic “I Am” sayings are explored in depth, along with their parallels in Indian philosophical thought. Special attention is given to interpreting the Johannine texts in light of their historical context and their message for contemporary audiences. By the end of the course, students will have not only deepened their understanding of Johannine theology but will also be equipped to critically engage with scholarly debates and communicate the text's message with contextual sensitivity and theological clarity.
