HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY IN INDIA

  • 66 Steps

About

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the historical development of Christianity in India, viewing it not as an isolated phenomenon but as an integral part of the wider social, cultural, and political history of the Indian subcontinent. While acknowledging the early origins and missionary encounters, particular emphasis is given to the dynamic growth, transformation, and contextualization of Indian Christianity during the 20th and 21st centuries. Beginning with the earliest traditions surrounding the arrival of Christianity in India, the course traces its evolution through the colonial period—examining the impact of Roman Catholic and Protestant missions—and continues through to the rise of indigenous movements, ecumenism, and present-day challenges. Students will study how Christianity engaged with issues such as caste, colonialism, education, gender emancipation, nationalism, and pluralism. Additionally, the course highlights the unique expressions of Christianity in North-East India and the contributions of significant Indian Christian leaders. By engaging critically with primary sources, historical interpretations, and contextual realities, students will be equipped to understand the complexities and contributions of Indian Christianity. The course fosters skills in historical research and interpretation, with the goal of enabling students to apply their insights meaningfully in their teaching, preaching, and ministry contexts.
